A wall clock is often the biggest piece of art on a wall, so size matters. Too small and the wall looks empty; too big and the room feels crowded. These simple rules will help.
The basic rule: two-thirds of the furniture
If the clock hangs above a sofa, console or bed, choose a clock about one-half to two-thirds the width of that furniture. For a 2 m sofa, a clock of 80–100 cm looks balanced.
Size by room
- Living room feature wall: 80–100 cm. Large moving-gear clocks work beautifully here.
- Dining room: 60–80 cm, centred on the wall or above a sideboard.
- Bedroom: 50–60 cm, so it doesn't dominate the room.
- Kitchen: 40–50 cm, easy to read from across the room.
- Office or reception: 60–80 cm behind the desk or reception counter.
How high should it hang?
Hang the centre of the clock at about eye level, around 150–160 cm from the floor on an empty wall. Above a sofa or console, leave 20–30 cm between the furniture and the bottom of the clock.
Choosing a style
- Moving-gear clocks suit industrial, modern and luxury interiors.
- Roman-numeral and world-map dials give a classic, vintage feel.
- Pendulum clocks add movement and suit traditional rooms.
- Black and gold works with most interiors; copper and bronze add warmth.
